As a Ph.D. student, Krin Gabbard studied Classical and European literatures at Indiana University. Today, he still teaches an occasional course in Greek mythology and literature. More recently, he has published on jazz, the American cinema, and popular culture. He is the author of Black Magic: White Hollywood and African American Culture (Rutgers University Press, 2004) and Jammin' at the Margins: Jazz and the American Cinema (Univesity of Chicago Press, 1996), and the co-author of Psychiatry and the Cinema (2nd ed., 1999). His most recent book is Hotter Than That: The Trumpet, Jazz, and American Culture (Faber and Faber/Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2008). He will play the trumpet with anyone who will allow him to sit in.
