As a Ph.D. student, Krin Gabbard studied Classical and European literatures at Indiana University and still teaches an occasional course in Greek mythology and literature. More recently, he has published on jazz, the American cinema, and popular culture. He is the author of Black Magic: White Hollywood and African American Culture (Rutgers University Press, 2004) and Jammin' at the Margins: Jazz and the American Cinema (Univesity of Chicago Press, 1996), and the co-author of Psychiatry and the Cinema (2nd ed., 1999). He is the editor of Jazz Among the Discourses and Representing Jazz (both Duke University Press, 1995). He is currently writing a cultural history of the trumpet, to be published by Farrar Straus and Giroux in 2006.
