W.G.S.S. annoucement

The Department of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Stony Brook University supports the International Women's Strike on March 8, 2017. The strike was inspired by the recent Ni Una Menos (Not One Less) mass mobilizations in Argentina against gender violence and by the women's strike in Poland, which succeeded in overturning a proposed abortion ban. Organizers from Poland reached out to activists across the globe to organize a strike on March 8, and there are now women and allies participating in almost forty countries.

The strike is on International Women’s Day, which was first held in New York in 1909 in honor of the International Ladies Garment Workers' Union’s strike of 1908. Now celebrated globally, it recognizes the achievements of women everywhere. International Women's Day is an important day for women and allies to stand in international solidarity to advocate for social justice.

In the United States, after the 2017 Women's March drew the participation of more than 3 million across the nation, there has been a call for "A Day without Women." In line with our commitment to social justice and to transnational feminist movements, the Department of WGSS stands in solidarity with this call and with women and allies around the world participating in the International Women’s Strike to advocate for social change.
