The Great Edo Art of Light and Shadow
The Minwa-za Company of Tokyo presents The Great Edo Art of Light and Shadow, a revival of the 200-year-old magic lantern performance style of Utsushi-e. Featuring a full company of eight lanternists, musicians and storytellers, The Great Edo Art of Light and Shadow includes the world premiere of a new creation as well as a combination of comedic and dramatic pieces from Minwa-za’s traditional repertory.
Minwa-za’s Utsushi-e performances promise to entertain and educate audiences with this spectacular yet little-known Edo screen entertainment, and to foster new cross-cultural exchanges about this uniquely Japanese magic lantern practice, itself a result of interchanges between East and West in the eighteenth century.
This humorous play will be accessible to all, and will be accompanied by subtitles in English.
Discussion with performers will follow the performance.
