Department Initiated Requests for Continuing Exchange Visitors

Effective April 20th, all initial and continuing requests must be submitted electronically through accessVIS.  In order to initiate a request an Empl ID# must already be created in the university system (PeopleSoft).  Scholars/Interns who have been at the university prior to April 20th in J-1 or other non-immigrant status will already have a profile in accessVIS.  

The following requests must be initiated by the department in accessVIS on behalf of the exchange visitor.  Departmental access is granted by Visa and Immigration Services.

EV Extension Request

Submission of this request informs VIS of the department's intentions to extend the program/ activity of the continuing scholar. An extension of the J-1 immigration status for continuing scholars requires an official salaried or non-salaried appointment letter to support the request to extend their stay.

H-1B Employee Application

The H-1B classification is an employment status for individuals who will perform services in a "Specialty Occupation," defined as a position that requires at least a bachelor's degree (or its equivalent) as a minimum requirement.  VIS will review, complete, and submit the H-1B petition to USCIS.

J-1 Scholar Request

Submission of this request informs VIS of the department's intentions to invite a foreign national to the U.S. for a program with a specific objective in which their primary activity will involve research, teaching, lecturing, observing, consulting, or receiving training.  Typically J-1 Scholars have at least a Master's degree, and those in the J-1 Student Intern category must have some college level work.

J-1 Student Intern

Submission of this request informs VIS of the department's intentions to invite a foreign national, who is currently a student in another country, to come to SBU to fulfill an educational objective(s) of his/her current degree program, for a maximum duration of a 12 months.

Permanent Resident (PR) Initiation

Submission of the Permanent Resident Initiation Request informs Visa and Immigration Services of the proposed Foreign Nation's wishes to pursue Permanent Residency.  Upon receipt, VIS will provide Whiteman Osterman & Hanna LLP with the information necessary to commence procurement of Non-immigrant Visa (temporary work permit including H-1B,TN or O-1) or Permanent Residence ("Green Card") for the individual.

Site of Activity Add/Change

J-1 Exchange Visitors in every category must request permission in advance to engage in activity at location not already listed on their SEVIS record.  Authorization for short-term visits, long-term visits, or to changes to the “primary” activity site may be request through submission of this form.
