Newsday Polls and Articles, 2001

The Center for Survey Research conducted four quarterly polls for Newsday in 2001. All four polls assessed local consumer confidence on Long Island and in Queens using the University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index. In addition, the Newsday polls assessed a number of other topics including reactions to the terrorist attacks of 911, support for tax cuts, investment strategies, immigration, and job approval of the local county executives. All told, roughly 20 stories were published in Newsday in 2001 featuring data from the CSR polls, including several front page articles. Sample articles include “A Portrait of Worry / Poll finds most on LI fear new attacks as habits change” (11/18/01), “Stock Answer Is Standing Pat / Poll: LI investors holding equity positions” (3/6/01), and “Poll: Approval Low for Gulotta” (3/2/01). The polls provided valuable trend information on consumer confidence on Long Island that has not been collected systematically since Newsday discontinued the poll.
