About the Program

Alcalá de Henares offers participants a relaxed, college town atmosphere conveniently located near the city of Madrid.  Famed for its history, Alcalá is the birthplace of author Miguel de Cervantes and its city center has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is home to the University of Alcalá de Henares where students will have to opportunity to take Spanish language and culture courses that fulfill major and/or general education requirements.

Course of Study

*6 undergraduate credits required
All participants will take a total of 6 credits (2 courses).

Participants select either the June 2017 or July 2017 session. View the course information by clicking the appropriate term here.

Course transfer information for SBU students majoring/minoring in Spanish available upon request.  All participants following the Stony Brook Curriculum (SBC) will fulfill GLO and EXP+ in addition to requirement(s) fulfilled by their coursework.

All undergraduate and graduate students in good academic standing (2.0 GPA or higher) may apply.

Applicants are accepted on a rolling basis and are encouraged to apply early.

Candidates may be interviewed to determine their qualifications for participating and representing Stony Brook University abroad.

Program Cost

Application Fee $60
Tuition Rate $270 per credit for NY residents ; $988 per credit for non-residents
Program Fee

$3,450 (includes housing, three meals per day, local excursions, and international health insurance)

Administrative Fee $200 (non-refundable)
International Health Insurance Included in the Program Fee
Other Fees

$1,000 (approximately; estimated personal expenses, books, passport, etc.)

Travel Costs

Estimated Airfare: $1,500. Students are responsible for their travel arrangements including airfare, visa costs.

Costs are estimates for planning purposes of the student and are subject to change at any point.

More Information

Credits earned on this program do not calculate toward a student's GPA at Stony Brook University. Non-SBU students are advised to check their home university policy on grade and credit transfer.
