Summer in St. Petersburg

About the Program

Experience SBU’s international summer school in St. Petersburg - Russia’s cultural center since its creation by Peter the Great in the early 18th Century. This summer school, founded by SBU Professor of Linguistics John Bailyn, is housed at St. Petersburg State University, Russia’s oldest university. The summer school attracts not only students from throughout Russia and Europe, but also an international faculty who offer courses in a variety of disciplines. Participants will earn 3 to 9 credits and fulfill general education, upper-division, and major/minor requirements.

Other Requirements All undergraduate and graduate students in good academic standing may apply.

Candidates may be interviewed to determine their qualifications for participating and representing Stony Brook University abroad.

Program Cost

Application Fee $60
Tuition Rate $245 per credit for NY residents; $742 per credit for non-residents
Program Fee $1,700 Program Fee:(includes housing, one meal per day, metro pass, group excursions, and international health insurance)
Administrative Fee $200 (non-refundable)
International Health Insurance Included in the Program Fee
Other Fees

Visa Fee: $250 (additional fees may apply).

Travel Costs

Estimated Airfare: $1,700.  All student participants will travel together to the study abroad site.  Students who do not abide by this policy may be dismissed from the program.

Costs are estimates for planning purposes of the student and are subject to change at any point.

Graduate students will be charged tuition at the current graduate tuition rate

  • Experience Peter the Great’s historic city, including the White Nights and the Hermitage
  • Interdisciplinary curriculum designed to accommodate a wide range of academic needs and interests
  • One semester equivalencey of Russian language study is available.
  • Study and live with students from overseas who are also participating in the international summer school

Credits earned on this program will calculate toward a student's GPA at Stony Brook University. Non-SBU Students are advised to check their home university policy on grade and credit transfer.
