Journalism Without Walls in China

About the Program

Journalism in China is part of “Journalism Without Walls,” a program of Stony Brook University’s School of Journalism. It provides journalism students an opportunity to learn their craft outside the classroom. The goal is to provide student journalists with a broader and deeper understanding of the world. Previous projects have included: A week-long exploration of Havana; a month-long exploration of St. Petersburg and Northern Russia and a three week long journey along China’s legendary Silk Road.

Learn about modern China in the Greater Beijing area, now one of the important regions of the world. This program is based at Communications University of China, one of the country’s leading communication universities. Students will not only explore Beijing, a city of 20 million people rich in history and culture; they will also explore the important region around the city, including the Great Wall.

This program is designed to expose students to the rich complexity of modern China and to teach students how to report and publish sophisticated stories from the road, using the latest in media technologies, including laptops, cellphones and iPads. Students’ work will be professionally published on the Journalism School's web site. In addition to meeting real Chinese people from all walks of life - including Chinese journalists, students will also learn about Chinese media and culture.
