Stony Brook University may have achieved its world-class reputation as a research institution, but we got our start as a teacher's college. And we remain deeply committed to serving the needs of K12 communities.

The School of Professional Development (SPD) oversees teacher and leader certification at the University, serving as the administrative home of the  Distributed Teacher and Leader Education (D-TALE) programs and the academic home of our Master of Arts in Teaching and Educational Leadership programs. From undergraduate teacher preparation, to certification extension courses and post-graduate school district leader certification, Stony Brook offers programs for teachers at every stage of their careers.

Stony Brook University is a member in good standing of the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP), a national accrediting organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. The graduate and undergraduate programs listed above have been awarded full accreditation by AAQEP through June 30, 2030. Accreditation acknowledges that a program prepares effective educators who continue to grow as professionals and has demonstrated the commitment and capacity to maintain quality.
