STUDENT ORIENTATION AND FAMILY PROGRAMS

The office of Student Orientation and Family Programs is dedicated to helping new undergraduate students and family members get acclimated to the Stony Brook community. Through our new student orientation programs, students will be introduced to both academic and social life at the institution.

Whether students are transitioning from high school (first-year students), another college or university (transfer students), or another country (international students), the Office of Student Orientation and Family Programs tailors orientation programs to meet the needs of each student.

Family members interact with our office during this acclimation period and beyond. During new student orientation programs, families have the opportunity to interact with a number of departments on campus to learn how they can best support their students.

After families (and students) have transitioned to the university, our office strives to be a single source of information for our families. Between 9am and 5pm every workday our office staff is on hand to answer the phone and guide family members to the correct information or individuals that can best answer their questions. In addition to these services, the office also creates several publications and events targeted at engaging family members in the life of the institution. Most notably among these, are the Welcome Newspaper sent to student’s home address every semester during their time at Stony Brook and the annual Family Weekend held in October on campus and in the surrounding community.
