The Center for World University Rankings has ranked Stony Brook University number 89 in its 2013 list of the world's top 100 universities. The ranking combines seven factors: quality of faculty, publications, highly-influential research, citations, patents, alumni employment, and quality of education.

The Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) publishes the only global university performance tables that measure the quality of education and training of students as well as the prestige of the faculty and the quality of their research without relying on surveys and university data submissions.

According to the CWUR, the university is the 54th best in the United States. Of particular note, Stony Brook University ranked as follows:

Citations: 98th
Patents: 90th
Quality of Faculty: 68th
