Dean of the Graduate School (Coming Soon)

Stony Brook University (SBU), a premier institution within The State University of New York (SUNY), invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the Graduate School. Stony Brook University is a comprehensive research-intensive university housing a teaching hospital that provides state of the art healthcare in the Long Island region, and a co-manager of Brookhaven National Labs, making SBU one of only six universities in the nation that manage a federal laboratory. The University is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU), currently enrolling over 25,000 students and offering over 300 degree programs (baccalaureate, master’s, doctoral, and professional).

The Dean of the Graduate School provides direction, support, oversight, and advocacy for graduate education, with responsibility for graduate admission and records, program development, program evaluation, and strategic leadership for graduate education locally and among our national peers. The Dean serves as a member of the University’s senior leadership team, working closely with directors of graduate studies and student governance across campus to improve graduate education at the University. As an advocate for academic excellence and for graduate programs, the Dean is responsible for overseeing all operations of the Graduate School and being accountable for strategic initiatives. Because graduate education is distributed across many academic departments within the Colleges and Schools, a successful Dean must work collaboratively with College Deans and other academic leaders to achieve efficiency and excellence. The Graduate Dean reports to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Dean will work collaboratively with the University’s President, Provost, and other Deans to further Stony Brook’s mission to be among the best research universities worldwide. The successful candidate will also hold the rank of full Professor.

The Graduate School of Stony Brook University is committed to the highest standards of academic excellence, a diverse and productive academic community, and ethical conduct in research and scholarship. The Graduate School administers and supports 44 doctoral programs, serving 2300 students and 50 master’s programs with over 1800 students. Stony Brook is among the leading public research universities in the Northeast, with a large and growing graduate population and a strong tradition of excellence in doctoral education across the Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Marine Sciences, Biomedical and Health Sciences.

Required Qualifications: Doctorate, in a discipline offered by Stony Brook University’s Graduate School, from an accredited institution for complete understanding of the nature of graduate education. Applicants must have achieved tenure in a faculty position, served as an academic administrator, and been actively involved in graduate education for seven full-time years working within an AAU Graduate School. Five years of proven administrative and managerial experience in long-range planning, resource allocation, and personnel development. Strong management skills, including stewardship of fiscal and human resources. Substantive and successful experience as a higher education administrator. Ability to work effectively with university senior leadership and with faculty in implementing an ambitious strategic plan. Commitment to diversity among faculty, staff, and students.
