asdfThe son of Greek Immigrant parents during the great depression, Dr. Vagelos received an undergraduate education in chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania before attending medical school at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons. Convinced his career path would be as a physician, following a residency in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Vagelos took a life-changing, chance opportunity to be a young researcher at the National Institutes of Health’s National Heart Institute as a clinician and a biochemist. After serving 10 years at the NIH he then transitioned to academia to serve as Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry in the School of Medicine at Washington University. While at Washington University, Dr. Vagelos was offered, and accepted, a position as Head of the Merck Research Laboratories restrategizing the company’s approach to drug discovery. His application of biochemistry to the discovery of novel therapeutics elevated him to chief executive officer and chairman, grew the company to one of the largest pharmaceuticals in the world, and became the standard for drug development and discovery throughout the industry. Retiring from his post at Merck in the mid 90s, Dr. Vagelos went on to his current position as the Chairman of the Board of Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc. Dr. Vagelos is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society as well as the recipient of numerous scientific, business and leadership awards. As a noted philanthropist, his dedication to education is unparalleled providing opportunities to countless students seeking higher education as well as to advancements in the math and sciences.
