Dr. Susan Scheckel has been deeply committed to both Graduate and Undergraduate education at Stony Brook University since her arrival in Fall 2000. She has been a member of the Graduate Council, the Provost's Strategic Advisory Committee and served five years as Director of Graduate Studies, for which she received the Dean's Commendation for Excellence in Service. She has directed nineteen dissertations and served on twenty-six dissertation committees during her years at Stony Brook, and in 2010 she won the Dean's Award for Excellence in Graduate Mentoring by a Faculty Member. She has also worked to strengthen undergraduate education at Stony Brook, as Director of Undergraduate Studies in English and a member of the Stony Brook Curriculum Implementation Group. She currently co-chairs the Stony Brook Experiential Learning Working Group, spearheading efforts to expand and improve opportunities for experiential learning at Stony Brook and throughout the SUNY system. In 2008 she won the President's and Chancellor's Awards for Excellence in Faculty Service.
After earning her B.A. in English at the University of Arizona, with a minor in biochemistry, she attended Stanford Medical School for a year and a half before earning her Ph.D. in English at the University of California-Berkeley. Dr. Scheckel began her teaching career at The University of Memphis, where she won the university-wide teaching award and served as director of American Studies. Her scholarship focuses on medical, legal and popular discourses of race in nineteenth-century American culture. She has won several awards for her publications, including: The Insistence of the Indian: Race and Nationalism in Nineteenth-Century American Culture (Princeton University Press), which won the South Central MLA Award for Best Book; and "Home on the Train: Race and Mobility in The Life and Adventures of Nat Love," which won a national award for the best essay in Western American Studies. Her most recent article, "Home-Sickness, Nostalgia and Therapeutic Narrative in 'The Fall of the House of Usher,'" will be published in Poe Studies: History, Theory, Interpretation, Fall 2017.
Kathleen Flint Ehm, PhD

Dr. Kathleen Flint Ehm has over a decade’s experience in postdoctoral policy and professional development, including issues related to responsible conduct of research training for postdocs, program and policy development, and fostering the advancement of postdoc women in academic science. She came to Stony Brook from the National Postdoctoral Association in Washington, DC, where she spent six years as the project manager for grant-funded initiatives. Previous to that she served as the Assistant Director of the Reinvention Center at Stony Brook, a national center focused on enhancing undergraduate education at research universities. In 2004, she spent a year in residence at the National Science Foundation where she was a Science and Technology Policy Fellow sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. There she specialized in issues concerning early-career scientists and helped manage one of NSF’s newest postdoctoral fellowship programs.
An astronomer by training, Dr. Flint Ehm was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Gemini Observatory North and a Carnegie Fellow at the Carnegie Institution of Washington’s Department of Terrestrial Magnetism. She holds a Ph.D. in Astronomy and Astrophysics from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a B.S. in Math and Astronomy from the University of Arizona.
