Monday, September 18, 2017 - Tropical Storm Watch

The University Police - Office of Emergency Management has been closely monitoring the weather forecast associated with several systems in the Atlantic Basin.  The following is the latest forecast:
 
A Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect for our local area including:
  • Huntington
  • Smithtown
  • Port Jefferson

WIND

  • Peak Wind Forecast: 25-35 mph with gusts to 45 mph

 

CURRENT THREAT TO LIFE AND PROPERTY: Elevated

  • Emergency planning should include a reasonable threat for tropical storm force wind of 39 to 57 mph.
  • To be safe, prepare for the potential of limited wind impacts.
  • Efforts should now be underway to secure all areas of construction, including lay down areas,
    building materials and areas of open excavation

STORM SURGE
  • LATEST: Localized storm surge possible
    • Peak Storm Surge Inundation: The potential for up to 2 feet above ground somewhere within surge prone areas
    • Window of concern: Begins early Tuesday morning

CURRENT THREAT TO LIFE AND PROPERTY: Elevated

FLOODING RAIN

  • LATEST: Peak Rainfall Amounts: Additional 1-3 inches, with locally higher amounts
  • CURRENT THREAT TO LIFE AND PROPERTY: Elevated
