Areas of Specialization: Ancient Philosophy and German Philosophy

Alan Kim works in both ancient Greek and modern German philosophy. Before coming to Stony Brook, he taught at Colgate and Dartmouth and was a Fulbright Scholar in Heidelberg, Germany.

Prof. Kim is the editor of The Brill Companion to German Platonism (Brill, 2019) a survey of Plato’s influence on German thinkers from Cusanus to Gadamer; his monograph on Socratic ethics and the art of living will appear with SUNY Press. His 2010 book, Plato in Germany: Kant—Natorp—Heidegger (Academia), traces the evolution of Platonic interpretation from Kant through the Marburg School to Heidegger.

He has published widely, including in Oxford Studies in Ancient PhilosophyPhronesisIdealistic Studies, the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy.

His teaching interests include Plato’s metaphysics, epistemology, and ethics; ancient politics and rhetoric; and early phenomenology.
