The Office of Institutional Diversity and Equity (OIDE) serves the entire campus community, including Stony Brook University, Stony Brook Medicine and the Long Island State Veteran’s Home and Stony Brook Southampton. The populations we serve include Stony Brook’s world renowned faculty and medical staff; our undergraduate and graduate students, our professional, administrative and support staff; contract employee’s working at Stony Brook and patients, visitors and guests.

Biography
Samantha Winter is the Complainant Navigator which allows her to provide confidential support and resource options to students, faculty and staff who experience sexual or interpersonal violence. Samantha graduated with her B.A. and M.A. in Forensic Psychology from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Samantha trained as a NYS Rape Crisis Counselor through VIBS, a local rape crisis center, and volunteered with them for four and a half years. Samantha has also worked as an educator for The Safe Center, providing trainings to community members, students and professional staff on sexual assault and domestic violence.

Within her role as Complainant Navigator Samantha is able to assist survivors of sexual and/or interpersonal violence in learning of their options and resources both on and off campus. Samantha is able to support each survivor with the path they feel will be most helpful and individuals will never be forced to make a report. Samantha is able to assist survivors with all steps of Stony Brook’s investigation/review process, UPD investigation and provide 24 hours a day crisis support/ emergency response following an immediate incident.

Sexual Misconduct Complainant Navigator

The Complaint Navigator is responsible for providing comprehensive survivor-focused services, including advocacy, on-call crisis support, supportive counseling, resource information, service referral, and emergency response to survivors of sexual violence, which includes but is not limited to sexual harassment, sexual violence, stalking and dating/domestic violence. The Complaint Navigator will collaborate and coordinate with various departments within the Division of Student Affairs and across the University such as Human Resources, Labor Relations, Title IX coordinator and deputies, Office of Instutitonal Diversity and Equity (OIDE) and University Police Department and to assist the complainant with resources, information and support during the investigation process from the initial incident through final University determination. The Complainant Navigator will accompany the victim to local law enforcement offices and courts as needed.

Sexual Misconduct Respondent Navigator

The Respondent Navigator is responsible for providing comprehensive services, including advocacy, on-call crisis support, supportive counseling, resource information, service referral, and emergency response, which includes but is not limited to allegations of sexual harassment, sexual violence, stalking and dating/domestic violence. The navigator will collaborate and coordinate with various departments within the Division of Student Affairs, Human Resources, Labor Relations, Title IX coordinator and deputies, Office of Institutional Diversity and Equity(OIDE) and University Police Department to assist the respondent with resources, information and support during the investigation process from initial incident through final university determination. The Respondent Navigator will accompany the respondent to local law enforcement offices and courts as needed.

Deputies  

Title IX Coordinators are University wide points of contact for those seeking information or wanting to report sexual harassment, misconduct or violence. Their role is to inform complainants of their rights and options. The deputies communicate all Title IX related information to the Title IX Coordinators. The deputies do not investigate, adjudicate, or sanction (unless that function is within their normal job duties, responsibilities).Deputy Coordinators are chosen by Stony Brook University's Director for Title IX and Risk Management, Marjolie Leonard.
