Keep music a part of your life at Stony Brook! The Music Department is proud to offer the following 1-credit musical ensembles for all students:

VOLTA (West African Music Ensemble) - MUS 235 and MUS 335
Thursdays evenings from 5-7 PM (beginner) and 7-9 PM (advanced)

VOLTA, Stony Brook's West African Music ensemble, is made up of students from Music 235 (Thursday 5-7pmBeginning) and Music 335 (Thursday 7-9pm Advanced). The ensemble performs music from southern Togo, Ghana and Benin. Students learn to play authentic instruments (drums, bells and rattles), sing, and dance. Semester end concerts feature African guest artists. No audition required.

Choirs will audition by appointment (sign up sheet at room 2342) beginning at 5:30 pm on Wednesday, January 27. There is no need to prepare a piece for the audition. Audition is for placement, and will involve vocalizing, as well as some pitch and rhythm sing backs. Auditions for Camerata Singers will also include a brief sight singing example. Students may sign up on SOLAR prior to the audition- Stony Brook Chorale (MUS 261/CEH 569) and Camerata Singers (MUS 271/MUS 566).

University Orchestra - MUS 262 
Tuesday Evenings from 6:30 PM - 9:30 PM

The University Orchestra brings together over 70 undergraduate (and graduate) students - open to string, woodwind, brass and percussion players (music majors/minors and qualified non-music majors) Auditions onMonday, January 25 and Tuesday, January 26 in Staller 2342. Sign up sheet for the auditions will be posted next to Staller 2342 the week before classes begin so that students can sign up for an audition when they arrive on campus. For the audition, students just need to play two short contrasting excerpts from a solo or concerto of their choice.

Wind Ensemble - MUS 263
Wednesday evenings from 6:50 PM to 9:50 PM

All interested musicians can join wind ensemble and auditions, which take place after the first abbreviated rehearsal of each semester, are for seating purposes only. New members are required to audition and continuing members of the Wind Ensemble who want to be considered for higher seating may also re-audition after the first rehearsal. Auditions are brief, and include a piece of your choice that demonstrates your abilities as well as the sight reading of some relatively straightforward music. The first rehearsal is the first Wednesday of classes-(Staller Center, Rm. 0111 at 6:50 PM).

Openings for all instruments (including, but not limited to: Saxophones, Trombones, Trumpets, Piano, Guitar, Bass, Drums, and Vocals.) You must audition to take these classes (amps, music stand, drum set will be provided - drummers bring sticks, etc.). Auditions will be held Tuesday, January 26, 11:00am to 4pm and Wednesday, January 27, 11:00am to 1:00pm and 3:00pm to 5:00pm in the Jazz Room: 0114-B, in the basement of the Music Building of the Staller Center. Signup sheet is outside the music office, room 3304.
