MUSIC PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN
The Children's Programs in the Community Music Program consist of musicianship classes and choral training designed for elementary school-age children, Pre-K through fifth grade. The classes are sponsored by the Department of Music at the Stony Brook University and are a part of the Community Music Program on Saturday mornings. The curriculum is based on a well-established musical pedagogy known as Dalcroze Eurhythmics.
Eurhythmics was developed during the early part of the twentieth century by Emile Jacques-Dalcroze, a Swiss composer and teacher. His unique pedagogical approach, based on physical movement, ear-training, and improvisation, was designed to develop coordination between ear, mind, and body. Originally taught to students at the Geneva Conservatory, Eurhythmics is now taught at music schools and conservatories all over the world to musicians of all ages.
The Dalcroze curriculum focuses on three areas of study: a) Eurhythmics -- combining physical response to music with techniques of analysis, b) Ear-training -- engaging the ear, eye and voice in hearing, identifying and producing the tonal elements of music, and c) Improvisation -- offering the opportunity to experiment with rhythm, melody and form using the voice and a variety of instruments.
In the Music Basics for Kids class, students experience music through games and exercises that allow them to use physical movement as they learn the basics of pitch, rhythm and notation. The idea that students experience music physically before they wrestle with symbols and theoretical abstraction is at the heart of the Dalcroze work. By developing their musicianship at an early age, students will be a better position to begin their formal musical study with deeper understanding and skill.
Forty-five minutes/week. Directed by Dorothea Cook. (28 sessions/Saturday mornings)
