Message from President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD
Dear Members of the Stony Brook University Community:
By now, you may have heard that Stony Brook is seeking reaffirmation of accreditation. As part of this process, we must engage in a self-review and demonstrate how we continue to meet Middle States’ 14 standards for accreditation. This process affords Stony Brook University the unique opportunity to express our confidence in fulfilling our mission and to examine the quality and integrity of all aspects of our operations. I am delighted to welcome you to our Middle States Reaccreditation website.
As a regional accrediting body, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (“Middle States”) examines each of its member institutions on a 10-year cycle to help promote educational excellence and ensure compliance with its outlined standards of quality. Stony Brook University received its initial accreditation from Middle States in 1957. Our Middle States membership demonstrates our commitment to self-assessment and to providing a comprehensive world-class education, which inspires lifelong learning.

Message from Dennis Assanis, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
Dear Members of the Stony Brook University Community:
Every ten years, the University is subject to a review of its accreditation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. We are now at the start of that process. It will entail the development of a self-study report, work on which has begun and will continue into the next two academic years, and a visit by an evaluation team in spring 2014. This is an important event in the life of an institution: a time to examine its goals and programs, to obtain advice and validation from peers at other institutions, and to seek public reaffirmation by its regional accrediting agency.
Due to the size, complexity and scope of an institution such as ours, it has been decided that Stony Brook will engage in a comprehensive self-study, which will investigate topics such as the assessment of institutional effectiveness and student learning, the interdisciplinarity of knowledge, the integration of our educational offerings and research activities, the inclusion of diversity and internationalization in our curricula, as well as many other issues of key importance in the development of plans that will shape the future of Stony Brook.
