Graduate Admission Requirements 

 

Admission is based on the Graduate Program Committee’s assessment of the applicant’s aptitude for research and the compatibility of the applicant's interests with the active research programs and capabilities of the Department. Applicants are advised to pay particular attention to the Statement of Purpose (page 3 of the application form).

 

A. Conferred Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, or a closely related area from an accredited college or university

B. A minimum grade point average of at least a B in all courses in Engineering, Mathematics, and Science

C. Official copy of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test

D. For foreign students, official copy of the TOEFL exam with a total score of at least 85 (Masters Program) or 90 (PhD Program) / IELTS 6.5 with approved equivalent

E. Acceptance by both the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the Graduate School. Institutional code: 2548; Departmental code 69

 

To apply for Graduate Studies in Material Science or Chemical Engineering at Stony Brook you must fill out an send online application. You can fill out the application online at Graduate School's online application. Please note that there may be more steps involved than simply filling out the form online. Please note that there are no application fee waivers. Also, when sending the required application supporting documents send a photocopy of test scores as well as transcript. 

 

Applications Instructions:

When applying to our program, please fill out the online application and send supporting documents such as, GRE and TOEFL scores directly to the graduate school via EST.  All other required documents such as official transcripts (we require two), letter of recommendation and state of purpose should be sent directly to the department.  All documents must be submitted before deadline
