U.S. Department of Education UISFL Grant

uisfl

The Language Learning Research Center (LLRC) and the Center for Multilingual and Intercultural Communication (MIC) have received a U.S. Department of Education grant under the auspices of the Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Languages Program (UISFL). This two-year grant, for a total of $175,000, will fund a joint project entitled "Developing and Strengthening Heritage and Advanced-Level Language Education."

This project enables an inter-departmental and inter-institutional collaboration to support students with high potential and a strong desire to become competitive multilingual global citizens whatever their majors and areas of concentrations. As part of this grant, SBU will institute a Certificate in Advanced Language Studies Program, creating a path for recognizing advanced-level language study. A heritage language component will be added for Korean and strengthened for Chinese and Spanish. New partnerships with our local community colleges will be established to facilitate articulation of language courses. New study abroad scholarships will be funded for advanced language students, and digital learning tools will be developed for multiple global languages. All of these initiatives will help Stony Brook University to become a leading institution in research on heritage language learning and pedagogy.
