Clubs and Organizations

Make your time at the IEC count in and outside of the classroom.  Stony Brook University offers numerous activities, clubs and organizations that all IEC students can take advantage of while studying English.  Aside from classes, the best way to enhance your student life at SBU is to spend time with other students and speak English!

Shopping

SBU is located in the village of Stony Brook, NY, a historical neighborhood just 65 miles east of New York City.  Located within the village is the Village Center, which includes restaurants, shops, hotels, museums and a working grist mill among other natural and historical sights -- all overlooking the beautiful Stony Brook Harbor.  Check out their website to plan your visit.

Close to the University is the Smithaven Mall complex where students can find stores from Aeropostale to Apple, Verizon to Victoria's Secret.  There are buses to take you there or just a short drive by car.

Located just 10 minutes east of SBU is the village of Port Jefferson.  Overlooking the Port Jefferson Harbor and the Long Island Sound, the village is home to several historic buildings and many unique restaurants and shops.

Transportation

For easy access to New York City, the Long Island Railroad's Port Jefferson line has a stop on the north side of the SBU campus.  Call (631) 231-LIRR for schedules and rates or check online.

SBU bus service is scheduled to closely adhere to the LIRR arrival and departure times, picking up and dropping off passengers at the North P lot bus stop (campus side of the station).  Public transportation is also available.  Suffolk Transit buses have stops located on campus to take students where they need to go.

The Port Jefferson Ferry crosses the Long Island Sound between the city of Bridgeport, CT and Port Jefferson, NY.  The ferries can accommodate passengers on foot, with bicycles, morotrsycles, cars, trucks and buses.  Service is year-round.

There's a six-mile bicycle path on campus that provides a scenic way to travel about campus. For your convenience or during unanticipated inclement weather, you can bring your bicycle on board campus buses that are equipped with quick release bicycle racks.  SBU Wolf Ride Bike Share is the University's bike share system that provides students, faculty, staff and visitors with a sustainable, healthy transportation alternative if you do not have a bike of your own.

Student Safety

Student safety is the highest priority of Stony Brook and the University Police Department.  Vehicular accident and pedestrian injuries remain a concern for all of us.  Whether you are walking on campus or driving a car, the use of cell phones, iPods or ther devices puts you and others at risk.  To reduce that risk, we encourage everyone to refrain from using these devices when traveling to your destination and simply "Put It Down."  Check out this video starring our own SBU mascot Wolfie!
