    Fall Semester

The IEC courses prepare students for attending university in the United States by enhancing their academic language skills.  Students receive instruction in critical thinking, essay writing, making oral presentations, note-taking, and comprehending academic lectures.

    IEC Courses & Components

IEC courses at each level have multiple components:

Core classes focus on Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening skills.

Enrichment classes include Grammar, Pronunciation, and level-specific classes such as Prepare for Success at SBU, American Culture, Idioms & Conversation.

At the end of each session, students receive a certificate of completion.

    Placement

After comprehensive testing during the first week of the program, students are placed into an appropriate level.

The IEC may offer classes at 4 levels depending on enrollments.  It is recommended that students have at least 2 years of English in order to be placed in the high beginning level.

*Please note: The low levels of IEC courses may not be offered at each session as the majority of our students enter the program with high intermediate level of English proficiency.

  • Conditional Admission

    Conditional Admission

    Graduate

Prospective graduate students for Master's level studies may receive conditional admission depending on the department they are interested in. The IEC offers a special track of the advanced level geared towards preparing international students for successful transition into a Master's degree. Please email the IEC directly at iec@stonybrook.edu for more information.

  • Prepare for Academic Success

Prepare for Academic Success @ SBU

The IEC has developed a course for students who have conditional admission to SBU and are attending the IEC 104 advanced level.  The purpose of these pre-matriculation sessions is to help students prepare for a successful first year experience at Stony Brook University as undergraduate or graduate students.

You will learn about the Stony Brook Curriculum (SBC), graduation requirements, course descriptions, prerequisites, majors and minors. You will also learn about different support areas on campus, such as tutoring centers and academic advising. There will be guest speakers from other departments on campus and you will be introduced to extra-curricular activities such as clubs, recreation, sports, and other events that enhance college life.

  • The Chat Room

    Chat Room

The IEC provides free language skills practice in the IEC Office with Teaching Assistants (TA’S).  The TA’s are undergraduate SBU students who will work as conversation partners or tutors. A separate schedule and instructions on how to sign up will be given once classes begin. Each month students are required to submit a log showing their participation in the Chat Room to their instructors for grading.
