Important Notice for All Accepted MSW Students
For students’ convenience, the School offers some required and elective courses in Stony Brook Manhattan at 301 387 Park Avenue South, 3rd Floor (Entrance 101 East 27th Street) in the late afternoon and evenings. Students must attend one course HWC 506 – Social Work in Health on the Stony Brook campus. Students can opt for available field internships in the City. For interest in this program, please contact Kathleen Albin, 631444-3141, Kathleen.firstname.lastname@example.org. Our library is located in the Health Sciences Center at the Stony Brook campus. From time to time students may also need to meet with their faculty advisors and field education faculty, and most of these meetings may also take place at the School of Social Welfare at Stony Brook.
Field education experiences are available in a broad range of human service programs that meet the needs of individuals, families, groups, and communities. Practicum sites are located throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, and the greater metropolitan New York area. Typically graduate students must complete a minimum of 16 credits of field education that are accrued each year at the rate of 4 credits per term, that is, 14 hours per week over a 33-week academic year. Advanced Standing students are required to complete 21 hours per week over a 33-week academic year, 6 credits per term.
Field education typically takes place Monday through Friday during the day and early evening. Some placements accept blocks of time less than 7 hours per day, but no placement will be arranged with blocks of less than 4 to 5 hours at a time. Placements that offer all evening and/or Saturday hours are few and therefore students should be prepared to offer day hours for placement purposes.
