Undergraduate Honors Program

To be awarded honors, a department major must 1) maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.00 and a grade point average of at least 3.50 in Spanish courses taken for the major; and 2) write a senior thesis judged worthy of honors. Students eligible to write a senior thesis must find a member of the department faculty to act as a thesis advisor and enroll in SPN 495.

Senior Thesis

The thesis topic must be discussed with the thesis advisor (a faculty member in our department) the semester before enrollment in SPN 495, and must be approved by the thesis advisor, the director of undergraduate studies and the chairperson. The honor thesis will be evaluated by the advisor and another faculty member in the department. The thesis should be about 30 pages long (double-spaced), written in Spanish, and formatted according to the last edition of the MLA Style Manual; and include, after the title page, a 200-word abstract in English.

Prerequisites to register in SPN 495 are: 1) the same as requirement 1, above; 2) senior standing; and 3) permission of the department. Application to the honors program must be made during Prime Time on the semester prior to registering for the program.
