Stock Gifts

Consult your financial advisor to find out about the possible tax advantages of donating securities, and remember to ask about donating securities subject to capital gains.

You can donate publicly-traded securities, the value of which will be the average of the highest and lowest selling prices quoted for the stock on the date of delivery. Marketable bonds or other securities that will mature are acceptable as gifts regardless of maturity date. Please contact us for complete instructions to process a gift of securities.

To transfer marketable securities by mail, follow the instructions below:

A. Securities Registered In the Name of Donor, Held by the Donor

Send unendorsed stock or bond certificates by registered mail to:

Stony Brook Foundation
Advancement Office
P.O. Box 1511
Stony Brook, NY 11790

Under separate cover, please send signed stock powers and stock release form (this form does not need to be notarized) to the Stony Brook Foundation at the above address. Sign one stock power for each company (e.g.,) 5 certificates of IBM require only one stock power. Signatures on the stock powers should correspond exactly with names as they appear on the certificates. Information on the number of shares, the company name and the certificate number(s) may be filled in. If left blank, we will complete the form for you.

The postmark date on the envelope of the transfer document is considered the date of the gift. If securities and stock power are personally delivered to the University, that date on which the donor has irrevocably relinquished control of  asset is the date of the gift.

A gift letter indicating the number of shares and the name(s) of each company whose stock is being donated will be sent to you for signature along with a return  envelope to the Stony Brook Foundation.

The Advancement Office notifies donor at the conclusion of transaction.

B. Securities Registered in the Name of SBF

For certificates registered in the name of SBF, please send in the certificate to the following address. Do not sign certificates. The Account Management Firm has the necessary paperwork on file to deposit in the SBF account. Send the unendorsed stock or bond certificates by registered mail to:

Stony Brook Foundation
Advancement Office
P.O. Box 1511
Stony Brook, NY 11790

The postmark date on the envelope of the transfer document is usually considered the date of the gift.
