Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner-Licensed Independent Practitioner (LIP) - Clinical Instructor of Neurosurgery (5 positions)

Required Qualifications

Physician Assistant - Bachelor's degree from an ARC-PA Accredited Physician Assistant program. NYS Physician Assistant license.  NCCPA certified and Emergency Neurological Life Support (ENLS) certification in possession by start date.  Two years of physician assistant experience in neurosurgery, neurology, general surgery, med-surg, emergency medicine or intensive care.  NIHSS certification and ACLS certification required. 

Nurse Practitioner - Current NYS RN licensure.  Master's degree in Nursing.  NYS certification or eligible as an Adult/Family Nurse Practitioner.  Two years of nursing experience in neurosurgery, neurology, general surgery, med-surg, emergency medicine or intensive care.  New graduates welcome.  Emergency Neurological Life Support (ENLS) certification, NIHSS certification and ACLS certification required upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications

Physician Assistant - Master's degree from ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant program.  Emergency and intensive care experience highly desirable.  Experience performing procedures including lumbar puncture, ventriculostomy, placement of ICP monitors, VPS taps and placement of lumbar drains.

Nurse Practitioner - Emergency or intensive care experience highly desirable.  Dual NP licensure preferred.  Experience performing procedures including lumbar puncture, ventriculostomy, placement of ICP monitors, VPS taps and placement of lumbar drains.

Responsibilities & Requirements

Under the direction of the Head Physician Assistant, Head Nurse Practitioner and the Neurosurgery Attendings, the LIPs will join a team of health care providers to cover the Neurocritical Care unit 24/7.  They will be assisting the Neurointensivists and Neurosurgeons with the care of patients in the 14-bed Neurocritical Care unit.  the LIPs may also train and be expected to provide inpatient care to the neurosurgery patients located on other units.  There are opportunities for the Physician Assistants to provide first-assist in the operating room.  LIPs will be expected to learn and assist or perform bedside procedures such as lumbar punctures, ventriculostomies, shunt taps, etc.  These positions will work 3 - 13 hour shifts per week, nights and weekends.

Special Notes

This is a non-tenure track position.  FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.  Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.  Anticipated Start Date: February 1, 2019.
