Nurse Practitioner - Clinical Instructor

Required Qualifications

Candidates must have a Master's degree in Nursing or completion of a course for Nurse Practitioners.  Licensed as a Nurse Practitioner in NYS.  One year of acute care Nurse Practitioner experience in diabetes management and/or Internal Medicine and past experience with patient education in a hospital setting.  Eligible to sit for and must pass the Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) within two years of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

Additional years of acute care Nurse Practitioner experience in diabetes management.  Certified Diabetes Educator.  Knowledge of current clinical guidelines and standards from the American Diabetes Association, American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and American Association of Diabetes Educators.

Responsibilities & Requirements

The Nurse Practitioner will see and treat patients with diabetes admitted to Stony Brook University Hospital and will demonstrate skills in collaboration, teamwork and problem solving to achieve desired goals.

  • Independently assess and evaluate new and follow-up consults to the inpatient diabetes consultation service at Stony Brook University Hospital.
  • Perform daily physical exams of patients with diabetes with special attention to body systems that may be affected by diabetes.
  • Review 24 hour tests of blood glucose values and recommend daily orders for medication to primary clinical team.
  • Educate patients and family members regarding diabetes self-management principles based on recognized curricula and national standards of care.
  • Identify discharge needs at the point of initial patient contact and assist in the transition of care planning.
  • Rotate through the established call schedule of the diabetes service and carry a paging device.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Special Notes

This is a non-tenure track position.  FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.  Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.  Anticipated Start Date: As soon as possible.
