Neurosurgery Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner (LIP)

Required Qualifications

Physician Assistant: Bachelor's degree from ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant program. NYS Physician Assistant license. NCCPA certified or must have in possession by start date. NIHSS certification and ACLS certification.  New graduates welcome.

Nurse Practitioner: Current NYS RN licensure.  Master's degree in Nursing.  NYS certification or eligible as an Adult/Family Nurse Practitioner.  Two years of nursing experience in neurosurgery, neurology, general surgery, med-surg, emergency medicine or intensive care.  New graduates welcome.  NIHSS certification and ACLS certification required upon hire.



Preferred Qualifications

Physician Assistant: Master's degree from ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant program. Emergency or intensive care experience and ENLS certification highly desirable.  Experience performing procedures including lumbar puncture, ventriculostomy, placement of ICP monitors, VPS taps, and placement of lumbar drains.

Nurse Practitioner: Emergency or intensive care experience and ENLS certification highly desirable.  Family certification preferred.  Experience performing procedures including lumbar puncture, ventriculostomy, placement of ICP monitors, VPS taps and placement of lumbar drains.



Responsibilities & Requirements

Under the direction of the Head Physician Assistant, Head Nurse Practitioner and the Neurosurgery Attendings, the LIPs will join a team of Physician Extenders to cover the neurosurgery service, 24/7.  Our need is to have dynamic and hard-working individuals to cover our service, beginning with the night shifts and occasional day shifts.  Orientation and training is provided to all new staff members regardless of experience.  Responsibilities begin with taking care of inpatient neurosurgical patients and emergency room coverage in a Level 1 Trauma Center.  Physician Assistants will also first-assist in the OR.  As experience is gained, there are opportunities for growth in numerous research and quality assurance projects.  They can also join our Neuro-ICU or expand into our outpatient offices.  Team members will interact with patients and families frequently.  Team members are expected to monitor our patient's clinical status and effectively communicate with other members of our team.  Full duties include Emergency Room coverage and Inpatient care of Neurosurgical patients, first-assisting duties, learning procedures such as lumbar punctures, placement of ICP Monitors, Ventriculostomies, and Lumbar drains.  Responsibilities also entail performing a comprehensive physical exam on patients, diagnosing, ordering/interpreting laboratory and radiological exams while collaborating with the attending physician.



Special Notes

This is a non-tenure track position.  FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.  Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Anticipated Start Date: April 1, 2020.
