Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Clinical Instructor

Required Qualifications

Physician Assistant: NYS license and certification as a Physician assistant.  Bachelor's degree from an accredited school of Physician Assistants.  Current NYS license.  NCCPA certification, BLS certification, PALS certification, ACLS certification, and ATLS certification. 

Nurse Practitioner: NYS license and certification as a Nurse Practitioner.  Master's degree in Nursing or completion of a course for Nurse Practitioner.  BLS certification, PALS certification, ACLS certification, and ATLS certification.

Preferred Qualifications

At least one year clinical experience working as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner.  1-3 years of related clinical trauma experience. Master of Science in physician studies preferred for PA.  Experience working in the following clinical areas: surgery, emergency medicine, critical care and intensive care.  Experience working in a Stony Brook Medicine outpatient setting.

Responsibilities & Requirements

Assists the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma panel surgeons in all aspects of clinical care delivery to the trauma patient.  Through all phases of care for the trauma patient, the NP/PA will coordinate and actively drive care forward, throughout the Acute Care phase of care (from EMS arrival to the patient's discharge from the inpatient area).  This includes, but is not limited to: participation in daily Trauma rounds, Trauma resuscitations, coordination with rehab services and all aspects of discharge planning.  The NP/PA will also take part in Trauma Performance Improvement activities.  The NP/PA will be responsible for the facilitation of phase of care transitions, eg: SICU to Step Down or Medical/Surgical to Rehab.  The NP/PA will be instrumental in plan of care development for each patient.  The NP/PA will be responsible for interpretation of radiological and laboratory findings for all trauma patients.  The service line requires independent proficiency in all Advanced Trauma Life Support critical care procedures, including: cricothyroidotomy, decompressive ventriculostomy, IJ/SC Central Venous Access line, arterial line placement, chest tube placement, pericardiocentesis for tamponade, and diagnostic peritoneal lavage.  The service line also requires independent proficiency in first assist responsibilities.

Special Notes

This is a non-tenure track position.  FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.  Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.  Anticipated Start Date: As soon as possible.
