Clinical Instructor - Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant

Required Qualifications

Nurse Practitioner: NYS license and certification as a Nurse Practitioner. Master's degree in Nursing or completion of a course for Nurse Practitioners.  Licensed as a Nurse Practitioner in NYS. Eligible to sit for and must pass the Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) exam within two years of employment.

Physician Assistant: NYS license and certification as a Physician Assistant. Bachelor's degree from an accredited school pf Physician Assistants.

Preferred Qualifications

One year of post licensure experience as either a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant experience in diabetes management and/or Internal Medicine and past experience with patient education in an outpatient setting. Eligible to sit for and must pass the Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) exam after two years of employment. Knowledge of current clinical guidelines and standards from the American Diabetes Association, American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and American Association of Diabetes Educators.  Previous experience with EMR.

Responsibilities & Requirements

The division of Endocrinology and Metabolism in the Department of Medicine is seeking an outpatient diabetes Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant who will work with physicians and nurses.  Successful incumbent will demonstrate excellent communication skills as well as ability to collaborate and resolve issues to achieve desired goals.  

  • Adhere to standard of care in diabetes management, perform a physical examination and make assessment and diagnosis based on this information as well as initiate, review and revise treatment plans and record and present data to supervising physician.
  • Assist physician with interventional treatments.
  • Respond to incoming phone messages from patients and make call backs to patients who are reporting responses to their attending physician.
  • Make referrals to other healthcare providers and/or consult the physician for further definitive therapy, order and evaluate appropriate non-invasive diagnostic tests and procedures.
  • Instruct and counsel patients and family members regarding diabetes self-management principles based on recognized curricula and national standards of care.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Special Notes

This is a non-tenure track position.  FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.  Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.  Anticipated Start Date: As soon as possible.
