Responsibilities & Requirements

Stony Brook University is undergoing tremendous growth under a new President, Dean and Chair of Psychiatry. In addition, our outpatient psychiatry program is expanding to meet the growing need for behavioral health care in the community. We are looking for individuals who welcome the challenge and satisfaction of working with a growing team of psychiatrists, psychologists, nurse practitioners, social workers, educators, and researchers who are all motivated to enhance the range of services provided to our community.

Position Description: Several opportunities are converging at Stony Brook University. We have four distinct, large (over 1000) patient populations:

1. A large group of patients with Alzheimer's Disease seen by our New York funded Center for Excellence in Alzheimer's Disease (https://www.stonybrook.edu/patientcare/alzheimers).

2. A large population of world trade center first responders, who have been followed for years.

3. A large number of healthy subjects in assisted living facilities who are volunteering for research studies.

4. The Long Island State Veterans Home, which has a dedicated 55 inpatient dementia unit.

In addition to the research opportunities provided by these patient populations, we have existing and new imaging capabilities coming to Stony Brook. Particular strengths of the institution are in fully quantitative PET imaging. The SBU PET Core consists of three units (Facility for Experimental Radiopharmaceutical Manufacturing, PET Ex Vivo Radiometabolite Laboratory and Center for Understanding Biology Using Imaging Technology [CUBIT]). A key focus of the PET Core is to facilitate the use of PET and PET/MRI technologies as research tools by providing support in radiochemistry, PET data acquisition, data management and data analysis.

PET imaging resources at SBU include:

1. A hybrid PET/MRI scanner (Biograph mMR). The mMR is equipped with a Swiss Trace Twilite system for direct arterial blood sampling and counting. Multidisciplinary faculty and staff with expertise in the state of the art reconstruction methodology and multimodal image acquisition and analysis provide support for studies performed on the mMR.

2. The new Medical Research Translation (MART) Facility. The MART, to be completed in 2018, is a 465,000 square foot building that will house a new imaging facility, including a radiotracer chemistry laboratory for short-lived positron emitters with an onsite 16 MeV GE Pet Trace cyclotron, a 100% research-dedicated CNS PET scanner, cGMP 11C and 18F radiopharmaceutical laboratory, 11C research laboratory and organic chemistry facilities. The MART research imaging instrumentation will include three additional camera byas. The building is designed to bring together translational scientists and clinicians to bring clinical problems into the laboratory for intense study and basic science innovation to the clinic.

Imaging studies are facilitated through CUBIT core facility. The CUBIT team works to ensure that PET and MRI images are transferred successfully to collective HIPAA-compliant database, are vetted through quality control, and are processed and analyzed properly through CUBIT's semi-automated image processing pipeline. This pipeline applies carefully assessed scripts from available image processing packages or custom-written software. Algorithms are written in MatLab, C++, and Python. All intermediate outputs of this pipeline are available for viewing through a web-based interface for quality assurance purposes. This web-based system allows CUBIT image technicians to examine, edit (if needed), approve, and lock results (i.e., prevent them from being altered). It also tracks all inputs, user comments, and software versions to ensure accountability for all image-processing procedures. CUBIT provides both image analysis services and education, based on researchers' needs.

We are seeking a qualified PET researcher to work with these resources and patient populations. The position is 100% research with 100% salary support for 3 years and 50% thereafter. The successful candidate will collaborate with the clinicians, engineers and statisticians, and CNS PET researchers.

Special Notes

This is a tenure track position. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Anticipated Start Date: As soon as possible.
