Tenured Professor (Department Chair)

Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate in civil and/or environmental engineering or related field, and at least ten years of teaching and research experience in these fields.
  • Proven record of securing substantial funding from major granting agencies and research foundations, and will have compiled an outstanding record of professional achievement.
  • Have excellent leadership and management skills, and have the decision-making and collaborative skills required to lead a world-class research and education program.
  • Appointment at the full professor rank is strongly preferred, although consideration may also be given to an exceptionally qualified associate professor.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to successfully work with faculty, staff and industry partners.

Responsibilities & Requirements

Stony Brook University seeks a visionary leader with proven academic and research track record to chair a young and rapidly growing Department of Civil Engineering starting August 2018 or on a mutually agreed date thereafter. 

  • Lead the department with new initiatives and vision.
  • Continue relevant research.
  • Manage undergraduate and/or graduate programs.  Also manage faculty, staff, space and budgets.
  • Support mentoring of newer faculty.
  • Cross-collaborate with other departments and industry partners.  Generate research funding in the form of research awards, scholarships, and travel and equipment grants.
  • Attract donations and endowments to the department.

Special Notes

This is a tenure track position.  FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.  Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.  Application review will begin on March 12, 2018, and continue until the position is filled.  Anticipated Start Date: Fall 2018.

Campus Description

The young and rapidly growing Department of Civil Engineering had its first graduates in 2016, completed its first ABET visit in October 2017 and is currently in the final review for accreditation through ABET.

The Department has active research programs in Coastal Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, as well as Structures and Construction Materials, and Transportation. As one of only two comprehensive (Bachelors to PhD) civil engineering programs within the State University of New York, the Department of Civil Engineering at Stony Brook University is well poised to play a key role in addressing the critical infrastructure challenges regionally and globally. It jointly directs the New York State Center for Clean Water Technology with the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences. It plays a key role in the newly funded Infrastructure, Transportation and Security Center.
