Research Assistant Professor
Required Qualifications
Candidates must have a strong record of directing for film and television including
at least one produced feature film recognized at a major film festival; an M.F.A.
in Film or Video or Equivalent, such as a B.A. with an exceptionally strong record
of produced films or a PhD with a strong record of produced films; and evidence of
successful teaching.
Preferred Qualifications
Hands-on experience with digital production, including familiarity with some of the
following equipment: Red Epic, Canon C-line, Avid Media Composer and Adobe Premiere.
Interest and/or experience in teaching culturally diverse curricula. Candidates with
leadership potential, as, for example, directing a program, building a film series,
organizing a film festival, or with competence in multiple formats (film, video, television,
and screenwriting) are preferred. Academic or community service.
Responsibilities & Requirements
Stony Brook's Film Program seeks a full-time in-the-practice Professor of Film to
start September 2, 2019. This position carries a 3/2 teaching load of film and television
courses, thesis direction, and advising at both the undergraduate and graduate level
on three campuses, located within an hour's commute of each other. Undergraduate
courses are held at Stony Brook; M.F.A. courses are held in New York City or Southampton.
FLM encompasses directing, screenwriting, producing and TV writing, and it is within
an entrepreneurial, innovative department that also offers an M.F.A. in Creative Writing
& Literature and during July, workshops for visiting students alongside the Southampton
Writers Conference. Our educational partner is Killer Films, the independent film
production company. The successful candidate will be expected to match Killer Films'
level real world entrepreneurship with their own classroom experience. Faculty members
with leadership roles receive course release. Early career, writers of color, LGBTQ,
as well as diverse voices are strongly encouraged to apply.
Special Notes
This is a non-tenure track position. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime
provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Anticipated Start Date: September 1, 2019.
