Assistant/Associate Visiting Professor

Required Qualifications

 The Loeb Professor of Digital Innovation and Audience Engagement must have: Minimum of five  years of full- or part-time experience teaching journalism or digital media at the university level, or extensive record of public speaking addressing digital innovation in journalism and audience engagement, or a minimum of five years leading a digital news organization, or a combination of the three.  Demonstrated experience interacting with news industry leaders. Demonstrated record of media exposure and leadership on the topics of digital innovation in journalism and audience engagement.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience designing digital journalism curriculum for university students and/or professional organizations.  Current professional work in the fields of digital journalism and/or public engagement.  Leadership experience in the design, implementation or review of multimedia and/or interactive journalism.  Leadership experience in assessing and promoting audience engagement using digital tools.  Awards for journalistic and/or digital endeavors.  Experience with user experience/user interface for news (News UX/UI).  Proficiency in data journalism.  Advanced degree.

Responsibilities & Requirements

 The Loeb Professor will engage students and faculty in the practice and power of journalism through harnessing digital innovations and research that enhance news content, delivery and audience engagement. This visiting professorship is funded by a grant from entrepreneur Michael Loeb in memory of his father, journalist Marshall Loeb.

The professor will:

  • Teach a minimum of one course per semester in the School of Journalism
  • Deliver an annual public Loeb Lecture on issues related to the field.
  • Become a bridge between the School of Journalism and media leaders, bringing those leaders to campus to help faculty and students stay abreast of emerging trends.
  • Raise the visibility of Stony Brook University's School of Journalism through public events, media interviews, publications and innovative digital projects that gain wide distribution.

About the School of Journalism: The School of Journalism, established in 2006, is the only school of journalism in the New York State higher education system (SUNY). In addition, to its core undergraduate program of about 300 majors and minors, the School of Journalism houses the Center for News Literacy, which has taught more than 10,000 students how to be more discerning news consumers, and the Marie Colvin Center for International Reporting. The School of Journalism trains all its students in multimedia journalism. The school is accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications.

Special Notes

 This is a non-tenure track position.  FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.  Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.
