TESOL Teacher Education Program
(Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)
Undergraduate students wishing to apply must major in Linguistics, have a minimum GPA of 3.0, and must consult the Undergraduate Director in Linguistics and the Director of the TESOL Program (see contact information below) as early as possible in their academic careers to obtain required signatures and discuss course selection to ensure completion of the program requirements in a timely manner. Refer to the Program of Study document as a guide.
Applicants must meet the minimum rigorous qualifications, listed below, to be accepted into the Teacher Education Program. All questions about requirements should be directed to the Director of the TESOL Teacher Education Program.
- Applicants must have earned a minimum overall grade point average of 3.0. Rarely, and at the discretion of the program director, student who have a grade point average lower than 3.0 but higher than 2.75 may be provisionally admitted, contingent upon their willingness to undertake remedial work.
- Transfer students must have earned at least a 3.0 at the institution from which they are transferring. Exceptions are at the discretion of the program director. If students have completed more than 12 credits at Stony Brook, admission decisions will be based on their Stony Brook grade point average.
- Applicants must have earned a 3.0 grade point average in the Linguistics major. Students are required to have taken LIN 101 (Human Language), LIN 201 (Phonetics), and/or LIN 311 (Syntax) prior to applying for the TESOL Teacher Education Program and in order to register for LIN 375 and LIN 449.
- Applicants must submit a well-written 500-750 word essay. More information regarding essay requirements can be found on the application form, below.
