The Academies

The Academies are designed for the camper that has a specific interest in a particular program. Campers will spend half their day in the chosen program and the other half participating in day camp activities (unless otherwise noted), the camp runs from 9am to 4pm daily. A hot lunch, snack, and one camp shirt are included. Enrollment is limited to 20 campers per academy, all on a first-come, first-served basis. All enrollment is based on the grade the camper is entering in Fall 2014. No early registration or faculty discounts will be given.


Educational Academies

 

New ! Archaeology: Can You Dig It?, 3rd to 6th Grade

Students will learn how archaeologists use clues they unearth to discover how people lived in the past. They will explore sites from different time periods, and even the archaeology of our own backyard on Long Island. Hands-on activities will include working with stone tools, pottery, animal bones and other artifacts.

Week 8 • August 18 to August 22 

Aviation Academy, 3rd to 10th Grade 
Campers have the opportunity to learn about flying and create different flying devices. They will review the history of aviation in our country and explore different forms of air transportation in this fun academy.
Week 6 • August 4 to August 8 

Chess Academy, 3rd to 10th Grade
A half-day academy. Learn to play chess at any level from beginner to advanced. Chess has the benefits of increasing your critical thinking, perception, and ability to problem-solve and strategize.
Week 5 • July 28 to August 1

Creative Writing, 5th to 10th Grade
This academy is for campers interested in writing poetry, short stories, and other forms of literature. They will be able to practice their skills while learning more about a subject they love.They will be able to stretch their imagination each day while keeping a journal of their works.
Week 6 • August 4 to August 8

Earth Science Rocks!, 3rd to 6th Grade
Students will experience five days packed full of laboratory experiments and demonstrations. They will, for example, melt “rocks”, search for and identify fossils, cast dinosaur tracks, calculate the dinosaur’s speed of travel, use laser technology to measure weather phenomenon and explore Long Island's glacial woodland environment.

Engineering, 3rd to 10th Grade
Campers will learn about common structures in engineering like the truss, cantilever and others. They will have the chance to build their own Rube Goldberg model and watch them go. Campers will also gain a knowledge of electrical and civil engineering concepts in this new academy.
Week 5 • July 28 to August 1 

Exploration of Space, 3rd to 10th Grade
Blast off into this exciting academy. Campers will build their own rocket and launch it into the sky. Children will also explore gravity, outer space, and our planetary system.
Week 1 • June 30 to July 3 (Closed July 4) 

Forensics, 3rd to 10th Grade
Learn about lifting a fingerprint or determining what type of bicycle tire made the tracks, and examine items using a black light. This academy will broaden your science knowledge.
Week 2 • July 7 to July 11

Individual Sports, 3rd to 9th Grade

Tennis Anyone?  How about Track and Field? Golf or Gymnastics? If you are a fan of these Individual Sports than take this academy!  Campers will learn the history and rules of each sport and devote time each day to playing them!

Jungle Bob's Animal Academy, 3rd to 8th Grade 

Explore...Discover...Encounter... At this academy we bring the wonders of the animal kingdom to you through interactive hands on experiences with live animals. Our out of the box curriculum is designed to stimulate the learning process while teaching responsibility, ethical behavior and generally how to be a good citizen of our natural world. From discovery of how animals live, move and thrive in a variety of amazing habitats to responsible ownership of domesticated animals the JUNGLE BOB ACADEMY is a place for the animal lover to be immersed.

Medical, 3rd to 8th Grade
Created and run by Stony Brook School of Medicine Faculty, this academy provides campers with ample opportunity to participate in a variety of medically relevant and scientific activities, including hands-on diagnostic testing, interactions with medical doctors, and biomedical research experiments.

Myth Busters, 3rd to 10th Grade 
Campers will explore interesting myths in the world of science; they will be able to experiment, create and invent some myth-busting ideas. Discover the difference between Myth and Fact in this academy.
Week 7 • August 11 to August 15

Physical Therapy, 5th to 10th Grade

Campers will have the opportunity to learn not only about how to treat an injury, but how to prevent injuries as well. Activities will include basic anatomy, how to properly stretch, strengthening exercises, and the basics of balance and proprioception. Campers will also learn about how certain injuries are repaired surgically.

Sports Management, 5th to 10th Grade
Have you ever wonder what it would be like to manage a Professional Sports team or run a Division I Athletic program? If yes, this is a perfect academy for you. Campers will explore the world of Sports Management and learn what it takes to make to build successful teams.
Week 1 • June 30 to July 3 (closed July 4)

Sports Medicine, 5th to 10th Grade
This Academy focuses on common injuries that occur in sports, what to do in case of an emergency, and taping methods such as ankle, hand and wrist taping. The camper will also learn the basic anatomy pertinent to athletic injuries, the principles of injury prevention and injury evaluation techniques.

Team Sports, 3rd to 9th Grade
Campers will spend 3 hours each day learning the history and rules of Team Sports like Soccer, Basketball, Baseball, Lacrosse and more.  Part of this academy will be classroom based, while the remainder of the time will be spent playing these sports!

Creative Academies

Animation Flix, 3rd to 9th Grade
In this fast paced camp, students will create up to 5 stop-motion animated flix!  Each day you’ll use a new style of stop-motion, combining the favorites of past years with some completely new styles, making this camp new each year for everyone to enjoy! It’s the ultimate arts and crafts camp where campers create, direct, and film their movies in age-appropriate groups.
Week 4July 21 to July 25

Band Academy, 3rd to 8th Grade
Campers will be exposed to a variety of music, such as jazz and popular concert band music. They will participate in a group instrumental lesson, a large group band rehearsal, and a basic note reading and writing lesson. This is for continuing band students only. At the end of the academy, students will perform a concert for family, friends and the entire camp!

Circus Stars, 3rd to 9th Grade
Campers will produce and perform in their very own circus show!  Workshops include training in a variety of advanced skills such as acrobatics, balance boards, rolling globes, tightwire and more.  The campers will work with our artists to develop and choreograph their skills into incredible solo and group routines.  The result is a knockout, one-of-a-kind camper circus show, creating memories of summer camp that will last a lifetime!
Week 3 • July 14 to July 18 

Creature Flix, 3rd to 9th Grade
Make your very own creatures and make them look like they’re running around the room in this wild stop-motion animation camp!  After designing and creating your cardboard creatures, you and your group will write the story, film your movies, and add your own voice-overs and sound effects in this one-of-a kind camp where your creatures can go anywhere you go. 
Week 2 • July 7 to July 11 

Dance Academy, 3rd to 8th Grade
Campers will explore the basic fundamentals of ballet, tap, jazz, and hip-hop. Through fun activities, campers will learn how music and movement relate.  This Academy is perfect for all dancers from beginner to advanced. 
Weeks 7 & 8 • August 11 to August 22 

Digital Photography, 4th to 10th Grade
Campers will be taught the basics of the world of photography, as they will explore the campus, taking shots of various subjects, learn the fundamentals of location and studio lighting, and learn the basic functions of a Digital SLR camera. Campers will be supplied DSLR cameras to use during this academy.
Week 2 • July 7 to July 11

DSLR Video Production/Music Video Academy, 5th to 10th Grade

Campers will learn all of the basics on how to shoot video with a DSLR camera. They will gain knowledge and confidence using the DSLR, through hands-on experience and shooting exercises. All students in this academy will contribute to a final project in the form of a music video!

Filmmaking Flix, 3rd to 9th Grade
Do you want to have a blast making a movie?  You don’t have to be an actor to star in these movies that you make from “Action” to “That’s a wrap”  We’ll guide you through the Hollywood process as you brainstorm, location, scout, use props and costumes, act and direct in a collaborative movie that will be fun for the entire audience.

Graphic Design, 3rd to 9th Grade

Want to take your photos to the next level! This Academy will teach you various techniques in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Using Photos you take and tools in these programs you can make advertisements for magazines, make yourself look like a zombie and so much more!!!

Jewelry Design, 3rd to 10th Grade 
Have fun while creating your own beads, necklaces, rings, pendants and more! Introduction to jewelry assembly while infusing your imagination with fashionable wearable art!

Lego Flix, 3rd to 9th Grade
We know you love Legos and we know you can create incredible worlds. Now it’s time to bring those worlds to life in Lego animated flix! We provide the Legos, and you provide your imagination. Students will create a Lego set with Lego characters for a movie they storyboard, write, shoot, and voice-over in age appropriate groups.

Magic & Balloons, 3rd to 10th Grade

In our first ever “Combo” Academy, campers will spend 2 days learning the principles of magic and how to perform a variety of magical effects to entertain their friends and family. Cards, coins, and everyday objects will be used. In addition students will learn about the origin and history of magic in different cultures around the world. And 2 days learning how to turn balloons into dogs, elephants, giraffes, swords, hats, flowers, hearts and more! They will learn how to use multiple balloons to make complex sculptures. The only limit is their imagination.

If you like to use Instagram, Snapseed and other creative photo-editing apps this may be the academy for you! Learn how to make your own filters and use Adobe Photoshop to create new cool effects!

Mosaic/Stained Glass, 6th 10th Grade

Come explore the art of Mosaics, using tiles, stones, beach glass, and more! Creating coasters, stepping stones and unique pieces of art, to decorate your garden, tables and rooms! Then campers will each create a unique piece of Stained- glass, with real glass! Campers will be given safety instructions, history and step by step instructions on the art of stained glass!

Not Just Doodling, 3rd to 10th Grade
Enhance your skills in drawing, no experience already? No problem! This class will expose you to a variety of drawing materials and techniques that any beginner or advanced artist will enjoy!

Week 7 • August 11 to August 15

Painting, 2nd to 10th Grade
Paint masterpieces using techniques with gel mediums, shaving cream, wax paper and tape in ways you would never think of! Using acrylics and watercolors in new fun and interesting ways!
Week 5 • July 28 to August 1 

Recycled Art, 3rd to 10th Grade
Create works of art using materials you might usually throw away! Experiment with can art, record art, and more to create unique one of a kind projects!

Theater 101, 4th to 10th Grade
Campers will be exposed to acting through speech, dance, gesture, stagehand work, and more. Led by an Acting Instructor with years of experience, campers will gain a wealth of theater experience in this one-week academy.

Theatrical Performance, 4th to 10th Grade 

Campers have the opportunity to explore the fundamentals of Performing Arts, Theater Productions and Musical Arraignments. They will spend 2 weeks learning performance techniques, costume design, set prep and more. Campers will be able to showcase their skills at a final performance for friends, family, and the entire camp.
Weeks 7 & 8 • August 11 to August 22 

Urban Art, 3rd to 10th Grade
Do you know the difference between graffiti and tagging? How about Wildstyle, Fatcap, Hardcore and Sharp styles? If you want to learn about the art of graffiti, and what these different styles mean, this class is for you! Learn how to make a stencil, wheat-pasting, and more!

Wearable Art, 3rd to 10th Grade

Love wearing the latest trends and designer clothing? Well now you can decide what’s hot and what’s not! Design and create your own wearable art while learning about the process of silk-screening, fabric dying and more!
Week  8 • August 18 to August 22 

You Can Build It!, 3rd to 10th Grade
Create 2-D and 3-D art with a variety of materials including plaster, wood, tile and cement to name a few! Projects to make any garden or home something to talk about!

Culinary Academies

Culinary Arts, 3rd to 10th Grade
Come cook with our chefs! Campers will spend three hours daily learning how to prepare certain foods from a large variety of selected food groups. This Academy will explore the basics of food preparation, measuring, and menu planning.

Italian Cuisine, 3rd to 10th Grade 
Ever want to make your own sauce? Roll your own rollatini? Create your own pizza? Then this Academy is for you! Campers will explore delicacies of Italian food and culture. Buon Appetito!
Week 3 • July 14 to July 18

Baking I, 3rd to 10th Grade
Come bake with us! Campers will learn how to make a wide array of bakery products and how to prepare, decorate, and display delicious food items. Within this academy, the campers will prepare desserts, pastries, cookies, and other baked goods.

Who doesn’t love a good BBQ! Campers will make their own BBQ sauce, prepare salads and other fixins’ for a Great American Cook Out!

Explore a variety of Mexican foods like: Nachos, Burritos, Fajitas, Chili con Carne and Chimichagas! Make your own guacamole and salsa and learn about the cultural connection of some of these popular foods.

Take your baking to the next level with this advanced baking academy.  Campers will have the opportunity to learn cake decoration, cupcake creating, pie making and many other baking skills.

Campers will explore the world of healthy eating. They will learn the benefits of a healthy diets and create delicious snacks that are nutritious. Campers will also investigate the pros and cons of different diets.

In this collaborative academy, campers will learn the science behind cooking.  Campers will investigate heat relationships, combining ingredients, taste buds, all will making delicious food items.

Video Game Academies & Game Builders Academies

 

Intro to Video Game Design, 3rd to 10th Grade
Campers use math, logic, communication, concentration, and critical thinking skills; problem solving; and creative thinking—all in the context of learning how to design video games. This academy offers campers an exciting introduction to the technical and artistic concepts and techniques of designing and programming video games. This academy can be taken multiple times.

Video Game Programming, 3rd to 10th Grade
Campers continue to build more advanced game development techniques. They create a new two-dimensional game and add advanced features and capabilities beyond their introductory-level games, adding custom sound effects and animations.
Prerequisite: Intro to Video Game Design

Weeks 6 and 7 • Aug 4 to Aug 15

Robotics, Level 1, 3rd to 10th Grade
Campers will learn the fundamental engineering and technical principles of building and programming robots to move and function. Through the use of sound, light, and touch sensors, campers will be able to program their robots to "see, hear, and perceive" their surroundings.

3D Modeling & Animation, 3rd to 10th Grade
This academy offers students an exciting introduction to computer-generated 3D modeling and animation. Campers will use software to create three-dimensional, computer-generated models, and will learn how to create their own 3D characters, apply textures, and add animation for use in video games and short movies.

VR Quest, 5th to 10th Grade
The mission of VR Quest™ is dedicated to integrating the latest educational virtual reality technology into the classroom. Campers will fully immerse themselves into a virtual reality. Campers will build their very own virtual reality game based on research they conduct.
