Louisa Wei’s documentary is about Esther Eng, the most prominent woman director in Hong Kong in the 1930s and the first woman Chinese-language film director in the United States. A San Francisco native and open lesbian, Eng’s contribution to film history has been sadly overlooked and her 11 feature films are mostly lost. With a captivating archive of newly discovered images and interviews with those who knew her, Wei uncovers a rich chapter of film history that challenges gender and racial hierarchies in Hollywood and Hong Kong.

The year 1942 was one of the darkest moments in the history of China, one that must never be forgotten. Acclaimed filmmaker Feng Xiaogang chronicles the human drama as a devastating famine ravaged the Henan Province, at a time when China was at war with and partially occupied by Japan. Based on a novel by Liu Zhenyun, Back to 1942 is a powerful and moving historical epic, drawing on eyewitness accounts of Pulitzer Prize–winning Time magazine journalist Theodore H. White, of an unimaginable disaster that is believed to have left more than three million dead.
