The Director's Message
The Confucius Institute at Stony Brook was inaugurated in April 2009 with the campus
visit of PRC State Councilor Madame LIU Yandong. Ever since, CI-SBU has been offering
non-credit Chinese language courses at various levels of instruction, and social and
cultural programming for the campus and Long Island communities. This is achieved
with the financial support of Hanban (in China) and in cooperation with Zhongnan University
of Economics and Law (ZUEL)—our partner institution in Wuhan, China. As a unit under
the International Academic Programs and Services (IAPS), CI-SBU also receives guidance
from both our Stony Brook University advisory board and Zhongnan University advisory
board. As a result of strong relationship with Consulate General of the PRC in New
York, CI-SBU serves as a platform for Chinese cultural diplomacy for the SBU community,
the surrounding community and many academic relationships that have been established
between China and Stony Brook University.
As director, I will work towards liaising with both academic and cultural units on Stony Brook campus to increase collaborations of academic exchange and cultural awareness to our campus and local communities. While continuing to provide non-credit Chinese language courses at various levels of instruction, social and cultural events on campus, CI-SBU will implement new academic initiatives such as inter-college conferences, junior scholars’ symposiums/workshops, and doctoral students’ lecture series, etc., on a regular basis.
