Family and Friends are invited to participate in the celebration of our Graduates’ academic achievement.


  • Ceremony Details

    The Winter Commencement Ceremony is scheduled to take place on  Thursday, December 21 at 11:00 AM in Island Federal Credit Union Arena located inside the Sports Complex.

    Once Candidates Apply to Graduate and complete the Ceremony Registration Form  ( 3) Guest Tickets will be secured in their name. On December 5, Candidates will receive an email invitation to their Stony Brook University account with instructions on how to access tickets. Please be sure to get your tickets from your graduate before the event. Graduates will be lining up prior to the Ceremony.

    Doors Open at 10:00 AM.  All Guests must present their tickets at the Arena doors. Children under the age of 2 do not need a ticket, but must sit on a lap throughout the duration of the Ceremony. Seating is on a first come, first serve basis. Strollers are not permitted inside the arena.

    Please note: the buying, selling, or gifting of tickets is strictly prohibited and may result in disciplinary action.

  • Directions

    BY CAR

    From New York City, take the Long Island Expressway (LIE, I-495) eastbound from the Queens Midtown Tunnel in Manhattan or the Throgs Neck Bridge or Whitestone Bridge in Queens to exit 62, and follow Nicolls Road (Route 97) north for 9 miles. The main entrance to the University is on the left. To find the campus via GPS, enter the address "100 Nicolls Road, Stony Brook, NY 11790."

    Call (631) 852-5200, or visit the   Suffolk County Transit website  for schedules, rates, and routes for public bus service between campus and off-campus locations.


    Take the   Long Island Railroad's Port Jefferson line from Penn Station in Manhattan to Stony Brook. The LIRR station is at the north end of the campus; bus service to the central campus is provided. Trains to and from Penn generally require transfers at Jamaica or Huntington. Hicksville is also a transfer point on some lines.

  • Parking


    Located at the south entrance off Nicolls Road. There you can take a bus to Main Campus.


    Located off of Gym Road

    *An ADA van, equipped with a lift, will be available for those needing assistance between the parking lot and the Arena.    


    Located off of Stadium Road 

    Guests with Disabilities

    Parking for ADA permit holders will be located in the Sports Complex Parking Lot off Gym Road. Proper identification is required. SBU's ADA Transport Services can will be accessible from the Sports Complex lot on Commencement Day.
