Interdisciplinary Faculty Cluster Hiring Initiative
The Clinical Affective Neuroscience of Anxiety and Depression (CANAD) Cluster is part of an Interdisciplinary Faculty Cluster Hiring Initiative, undertaken in accordance with SUNY 2020 plan to hire 250 faculty members. The interdisciplinary faculty cluster hires are aimed at addressing society’s most vexing challenges through the collaboration of natural, life, and social sciences; technology; medicine; humanities; policy; business; and the arts. The positions are designated for faculty members whose research and teaching interests are interdisciplinary. The goals of this initiative are to strategically place Stony Brook University on the emerging frontiers of research and knowledge and to enhance our ability to shape new fields of discovery, learning and engagement.
Cluster Hires in Clinical Affective Neuroscience of Anxiety and Depression (CANAD)
Anxiety and depression, the two most common and costly mental disorders, are increasingly understood in terms of fundamental disruptions of core neural systems related to emotion. Leveraging significant existing strengths in each of the three lead departments, the CANAD cluster will establish a multi-disciplinary group of scholars who will work together to elucidate the mechanisms and treatment of anxiety and depression through research in neuroscience that bridges human and non-human animal work. Such mutually informative translational research across multiple levels of analysis (molecular to behavioral) has been at the core of most major advances in treatment of brain and behavioral disorders. This cluster will recruit a total of three new faculty whose research interests span developmental cognitive/affective neuroscience, psychopharmacology and neuroimaging, and systems neuroscience. Academic appointments for cluster faculty will be based on their areas of research and will be in the Departments of Psychology, Neurobiology and Behavior, and Psychiatry and Behavioral Science.
Tenure Track Faculty Member (Developmental cognitive/affective neuroscience)
Currently we seek to hire a tenure-track faculty member at the Assistant or Associate Professor level to begin Fall 2014. In this round of recruitment, applications from candidates with expertise in the developmental cognitive/affective neuroscience of anxiety and/or depression using functional neuroimaging are particularly encouraged. Candidates must have a PhD from an accredited institution in psychology, neurobiology, or a related field. Candidates must have demonstrated excellence in innovative research and have strong potential for being able to participate in the teaching mission of the department they join at undergraduate and graduate levels.
We are particularly interested in applicants who study core neural systems relevant to anxiety and depression (e.g., threat and/or reward) from a developmental perspective using neuroimaging methods, but we will also consider strong candidates with other relevant interests and methods. This hire is part of a campus-wide initiative on the clinical affective neuroscience of anxiety and depression; the successful candidate will work with future hires and existing faculty in Psychology, Psychiatry, and Neurobiology and Behavior on translational research in anxiety and depression.
Stony Brook University has excellent and rapidly expanding neuroimaging facilities and access to exceptional facilities for the development of innovative research equipment for animal and human studies. The departments of Psychology, Psychiatry, and Neurobiology and Behavior have significant strengths in clinical, neuroimaging, and translational research on depression and anxiety, and a strong record of collaboration. Required Qualifications: Ph.D. in psychology- or neuroscience-related field. Innovative research in cognitive and/or affective neuroscience. Work is relevant to mood and/or anxiety disorders. Potential for establishing a productive and fundable research program. Can contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching in participating departments.
Preferred Qualifications: Expertise in functional neuroimaging. Experience in research with children and/or adolescents.
