Computational Physical Organic Chemistry

Research in the Patterson group focuses on determining reaction mechanisms involving organic molecules. We employ quantum mechanical calculations to determine the kinetics and thermodynamics for probable reaction pathways involving interesting or unusual species. In the past, we have explored the destruction of chemical warfare agents, the reactions and properties of interstellar and atmospheric molecules, and important properties of biolmolecules. One current effort is devoted to understanding the decomposition and reformation of the bovine growth hormone trenbolone in aqueous solutions representative of surface water. It has been believed that trenbolone leached from cattle into surface water decomposes rapidly and poses no lingering threat to the environment. However, recent work from our group in collaboration with others suggests otherwise. Our primary objective is to determine probable decomposition products of trenbolone and ascertain whether these products might easily reform trenbolone or other potentially harmful steroids.
