- Eileen Larney - Chief Technical Advisor (CVB Head of Operations), Research Coordinator
Eileen was born in New York, USA. She studied Anthropology at SUNY Geneseo and began working with ICTE in 1997 as a student on the Stony Brook Madagascar Study Abroad Program. After the study abroad, she continued field research as an assistant on several projects in Madagascar as well as Costa Rica, Thailand and Zambia. She conducted her Masters and Ph.D. thesis through IDPAS at Stony Brook University exploring female social interactions, infant development and genetics of Phayre’s leaf monkeys in Thailand. She began working again with ICTE as a Teaching assistant in 2008 and then returned to Madagascar in August 2008 to establish a conservation project for Prolemur simus in Ivato, southeastern Madagascar as well as be the Resident Coordinator of the Stony Brook Madagascar Fall Study Abroad Program. She moved to Ranomafana in 2009 as CVB’s Chief Technical Advisor, continues to run the Ivato Project and also acts as CVB’s Interim Research Coordinator as of 2010. Eileen’s specializes in: Primate Behavior and Demography, Population Genetics, Biodiversity, Ecology, Endemic Reforestation, Conservation, Sustainable Development, Administration and Finance.
- Dr. Jean Claude Razafimahaimodison – Ranomafana TEAM Site Manager
Jean Claude was born in Faratsiho, outside of Ansirabe, Madagascar. He started his studies in ornithology at the University of Antananarivo (and as student at the ICTE research cabin from 1992) and received his Ph.D. at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Massachusetts, USA in 2004 on the influence of tourism on the pitta-like ground roller in Ranomafana National Park. Jean Claude has experience as a student researcher and research assistant, laboratory assistant (AMNH and Department of Anthropology, UMASS, Amherst) and as a Biodiversity conservation fellow (AMNH). In 2005, Jean Claude joined Centre ValBio as the Research Coordinator, where is led ornithological teams exploring Ranomafana’s bird life histories. In 2010, Jean Claude transferred as CVB’s Site Manager for the Tropical Ecology Assessment and Monitoring (TEAM) Ranomafana Project in a partnership with the CI’s global monitoring network exploring long-term changes in vegetation and terrestrial vertebrates in relation to climate change. Jean Claude’s specialties are in: Ornithology, Ecology, Behavioral studies, Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, Biodiversity, Biology and Administration.
- Pascal Rabeson – Coordinator of Monitoring and Partnerships Department
Pascal was born in Toamasina, Madagascar and began studies in tropical ecology at the University of Antananarivo, Madagascar as well as in Russia and the USA. He holds a dual masters: (2001) Master of Science (Ecology), Institute of Ecology, University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia, USA and (1991) Master of Science (Ichthyology and Fish Farming), Technical Fisheries Institute, Astrakhan, Russia. From 1994-1995, Pascal worked on Malagasy ant curation at the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard, Cambridge, MA, USA. He rejoined ICTE in 1995 as the Technical Advisor in Ecological Monitoring in Ranomafana through 1997 as well as the RNP research cabin manager. From 2001-2003 he was a Field Manager of the Arthropod Project in Madagascar affiliated with the California Academy of Sciences (CAS). In 2003, he joined CVB as the Regional Coordinator of “Drug Discovery and Biodiversity Conservation in Madagascar” project in Ranomafana funded by NIH/ICBG based at CVB, Ranomafana. As of 2006 he began as Coordinator of Monitoring and Partnerships Department at Centre ValBio and is a member of CVB’s Senior Management Team (SMT). Pascal’s specializes in: Entomology, Ecology, Conservation, Participatory Ecological Monitoring, Project Management, Ichthyology and Fish Farming, Administration and Finance.
- Désiré Randrianarisata – Coordinator of Logistics and Audio-Visual Department
Dede was born in Antananarivo, Madagascar. After his studies, Dede received additional training as a driver and began working with ICTE in 1995 as a driver for the RNPP. He gained extensive experience as an expedition assistant in biodiversity research, quickly mastering logistical and technical expedition coordination and technology (photography and computers). As Centre ValBio was inaugurated in 2003, Dede moved permanently to Ranomafana as the coordinator of CVB’s Logistics and Audio-Visual Department to be closer to the rainforest and is also as a member of CVB’s Senior Management Team. He has received training in Photography and Videography in both the USA and Madagascar and helps coordinate programs throughout Madagascar, such as annual cross-country trips for study abroad programs. In addition to running the logistics at Centre ValBio, he produces VaoVao ValBio, posters and videos concerning environment and biodiversity. Dede’s specializes in: Logistics, Mechanics, Electronics, Technology, Photography, Videography, Informatics, Material Management & Inventory, Production of brochures and posters as well as Administration.
- Florent Ravoavy – Coordinator of Conservation Education & Outreach DepartmentFlorent was born in Ambinanimahamasina, Madagascar. Florent’s academic studies started in paleontology at the University of Antananarivo. Florent gained extensive teaching experience as a Teaching Assistant in the Department of Anthropology and Paleontology, Faculty of Science, University of Antananarivo (1985-1988), teacher at the Private College of Ankadindramamy, Antananarivo (1989-1990), and as a teacher at the Chrétien College of Manjakaray, Antananarivo (1990-1993). In June 1993, Florent joined ICTE as the Research Station Cabin Manager at Ranomafana National Park (June 1993-1994). From July-October 1994, Florent began a consultancy at the Ranomafana National Park Museum and then acted as the Ranomafana National Park Museum Director, Head of the Interpretation Center, and Field Coordinator of the ICTE Linkage Grant Program (UDLP) from 1994-1997. From 1997-2000, Florent transferred to the national park system as the Head of the Environmental Education Department at MNP/RNP and then as the Head of the Ecotourism and Environmental Education Department at MNP/RNP (2000-2004). In August 2004, Florent rejoined Centre ValBio as the Coordinator of the Education and Outreach Department and is also a member of CVB’s Senior Management Team. Florent’s specializes in: Paleontology, History, Biodiversity, Environmental education, Interpretation of nature & culture, Health and Hygiene, Endemic reforestation, Fruit trees and fish farming, Sustainable Agriculture and Administration.
There are 56 additional permanent staff from research technicians and field guides to kitchen and facilities staff, all of whom are local Malagasy. During the high season additional temporary staff lend to a total of over 85 contracted employees. During the next five years with the inauguration of Namanabe Hall, permanent staff is expected to increase to 78:
