Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences

Stony Brook University, the State University of New York, invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Stony Brook is a comprehensive research-intensive university and a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities. Stony Brook University consists of 12 schools and colleges, and a teaching hospital that provides state-of-the-art healthcare in the Long Island region. Stony Brook University also manages and performs joint research with Brookhaven National Laboratory, the only Department of Energy Laboratory in the Northeast, and shares doctoral programs with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a world-renowned molecular biology institute. Home to the Emerson String Quartet, the Jackson Pollock House in East Hampton, New York, the Mellon Award winning Humanities Institute, and the Southampton Arts Program, and with endeavors that extend to the Turkana Basin Institute in Kenya and the Ranomafana National Park in Madagascar, Stony Brook University sustains an international reputation that cuts across the arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Powered by initiatives such as NY SUNY 2020, which enables hiring throughout the university of over 250 new faculty over five years, Stony Brook is poised to become one of the top 20 research universities in the United States.

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) is the largest academic unit within the university, consisting of 25 departments, 6 academic programs, and 6 centers; the college offers 36 baccalaureate degrees and 43 minors, and partners with the Graduate School to offer 29 masters degrees and 27 doctoral degrees. CAS is committed to excellence in its wide-ranging individual disciplines, as well as in interdisciplinary collaboration, offering opportunities for students at all levels to study with faculty members who are pre-eminent leaders in research, scholarship, and creative expression. The overarching goal of the teaching mission of the College is to provide an education that results in informed, inquisitive, and inventive citizens, who are prepared to better understand and contribute to the rapidly-changing global environment in which we live.

The Dean is the leading academic, administrative, and financial officer of CAS, which encompasses disciplines as far-ranging as neurobiology and chemistry on one end of the intellectual and creative spectrum, to interdisciplinary social science and humanities research, studio art, and music on the other. The Dean provides leadership in defining and communicating the College’s Strategic Goals; encourages the recruitment of excellent faculty and staff; and stimulates broad and creative thinking in the curricular development of the various individual programs and collaborative efforts between programs, departments, and centers. Because of the diversity of undergraduate programs within CAS, as well as their distribution across many academic departments within the University’s other colleges and schools, a successful Dean must work collaboratively with his/her department chairs, center directors, other deans and academic leaders to achieve academic excellence and efficiencies. He or she must also stimulate productive relationships with university governance, alumni, donors, and members of the outside community. The Dean reports to the Provost (who is the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs) and is expected to take a leadership role within the University’s senior management team.

Required: Ph.D. in a discipline offered by Stony Brook University’s College of Arts and Sciences; a distinguished national/international reputation for sustained scholarly accomplishments, and a record of excellence in teaching, research, and service appropriate to appointment at the tenured rank of Full Professor in an arts or sciences program at a major research university. Strong management skills, including stewardship of fiscal and human resources, and successful experience as a higher education administrator will be viewed as highly beneficial. The ability to work effectively with university senior leadership and with faculty in implementing an ambitious strategic plan, a commitment to diversity among faculty, staff, and students, and superior communication skills, and a demonstrated dedication to student and faculty services are also essential.

The successful candidate should have interest, curiosity, and knowledge in a wide range of academic disciplines, and respect for all scholarly and creative endeavors that take place in a robust research university environment. The incumbent must have experience in administering collaborative ventures across interdisciplinary lines, and an expansive understanding of how the arts, humanities, and sciences interact, as well as vision concerning the collaborative possibilities of these diverse areas of endeavor. The successful candidate will also need to demonstrate the ability to efficiently realize the highest educational aspirations, as well as excellent communication and managerial skills in dealing with a large contingent of scholars, scientists, artists, staff, and students.

Nominations and applications will be held in confidence and will be reviewed immediately. The university is committed to cultural diversity; individuals from underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply.
