Recent Grads Land Cameos at Major TV Companies
Career Center works with T. Howard Foundation to connect students with paid media internships
Three Stony Brook University alumni were among those who received recognition for their student internships within the media industry at the T. Howard Foundation 20th Annual Diversity Awards Dinner, held this spring in New York City.
The mission of the T. Howard Foundation is to promote diversity in the multimedia and entertainment industry. In addition to full-time paid summer internships, the T. Howard Foundation provides talented interns with networking opportunities, professional development training, scholarships and mentors.
The Stony Brook alumni are Uniondale, New York, residents Anthony King ’13 and Maritza Myrthil ’13, and Antonia Montanez ’12, from Brooklyn, New York, all business management majors. King and Montanez heard about the T. Howard Foundation from the Career Center; Myrthil got word of it from a friend.
“Being acknowledged by the T. Howard Foundation means being accepted into a class of amazing students from various backgrounds and colleges throughout the country,” said King. For his 2012 summer internship King developed and redesigned tools and interfaces for three websites for Comcast Corporation in West Chester, Pennsylvania.
Montanez began working at Discovery Communications, a nonfiction media company, as a direct response ad sales assistant in October 2012. She is responsible for ensuring that the highest-paid spots are placed and aired for the Science Channel. Previously T. Howard helped Montanez secure paid internships at NBCUniversal Inc. in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, and at A&E Networks LLC in New York City.
“At NBCUniversal I landed a paid summer intern position in marketing, my true passion,” Montanez said. “While there I worked on a booklet for Bravo’s Top Chef Tour, which was shown to NBCU’s affiliates. At the end of my internship at A&E, I gave a competitive analysis presentation to the entire History Marketing Department on ways to better the product.”
Montanez also credits Stony Brook’s Career Center with preparing her for the corporate world. “As my supervisor and mentor, Kimberly Joy Dixon always pushed me to excel. She saw more in me at times than I did.”
T. Howard helped Myrthil secure a paid summer internship in 2012 at HBO where she worked on the hit series Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones. There, as a member of the affiliate marketing team, her job was to help find new ways to engage viewers on Facebook including creating a gangster personality quiz for each character on Boardwalk Empire and analyzing the success of the Game of Thrones.
In addition to the internship, Myrthil was the recipient of a Scott Weiss Scholarship from T. Howard, which helped pay for her spring semester at Stony Brook. She acknowledges Stony Brook’s Career Center for helping her prepare for her interview with the organization.
“Before I had my interviews with T. Howard and HBO, I scheduled a mock interview with senior counselor Joanna Durso, who helped me prepare my answers for common questions she believed they would throw at me,” she said, adding that she also attended a National Association of Black Accountants regional conference, which yielded pointers on how to dress, network and give a “proper handshake.”
All that preparation has paid off, said Myrthil, who this past February landed an internship at fashion house Todd Snyder in New York City and plans to pursue a career in the fashion industry.
Being at T. Howard’s Diversity Awards Dinner was a dream come true, Myrthil said. She met three female executives from BET Networks, A&E Networks and Time Warner who, for Myrthil, are “inspirational leaders who are dedicated to changing the face of television.”
She said she is grateful to T. Howard for giving her “an opportunity to have something that most college students do not get a chance to experience — industry exposure” and for making her realize the “endless possibilities that are out there in the world.”
