Herbert F. Lewis

Dr. Lewis received a Ph.D. in 1996 and an M.S. in 1991 from the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at Stony Brook University with a focus on Operations Research. He also earned a B.E. in 1989 with a double major in Electrical Engineering and Applied Mathematics and Statistics from Stony Brook University. Before coming to the Department of Technology and Society in 2008, Dr. Lewis spent eleven years as a faculty member in the College of Business (formerly known as the Harriman School for Management and Policy) at Stony Brook University.
Dr. Lewis has published extensively in the area of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), a linear programming-based methodology for measuring the relative efficiency of units that consume multiple inputs to produce multiple outputs. His work has contributed to both the DEA methodology and its applications. In addition, Dr. Lewis has published papers in the areas of vehicle routing, job scheduling, gene sequencing and educational pedagogy.
Dr. Lewis has taught courses in Quantitative Methods in Management, Decision Support Systems, Modern Engineering, Management Science, Decision Science, Business Statistics, Operations Management, and Management Information Systems to both graduate and undergraduate students. He has developed or co-developed the courses in Decision Support Systems and Business Statistics.
Dr. Lewis has worked as a consultant on various projects. For Management Partnership Services, Inc., he developed heuristic models to route and schedule school buses and applied the model to analyze data from school districts in Fairfax County VA. For MAXIMUS, Inc., he measured the utilization of their 11 profit centers (PCs) with cost plan activities during the 2001 fiscal year and provided assessments of each PC. In a project with the New York State Small Business Development Center, Dr. Lewis helped develop the Small Business Needs Assessment survey and analyzed the data from the returned surveys. In Addition, he developed software for Roche Diagnostic Systems, writing FlowPerfect, a Visual Basic Windows-based program that automates the analysis of laboratory workflow.
