Peter Paul, Associate Vice President for Brookhaven Affairs

Peter Paul is a Distinguished Service and Research Professor in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at Stony Brook University (SBU). On  August 1, 2011, he was appointed Associate Vice President for Brookhaven Affairs in the Provost’s Office at SBU. In this capacity he supports the Provost in fostering and enlarging the interactions and collaborations between Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and Stony Brook University. He has offices in the Provost’s suite 407 on the 4th floor of the SBU Administration Building and in the Director’s office suite at BNL.

Peter PaulPeter Paul is a nuclear physicist who has worked in many subareas of the field: Nuclear structure physics, heavy ion physics, neutrino physics and particle accelerators. In the 1970’s and 80’s he and professor Gene Sprouse from SBU designed and built one of the first superconducting linear accelerators, in the Nuclear Structure laboratory at Stony Brook. It was used for research until 2006.

He joined SBU in 1967 coming from Stanford University. Over the years he was head of the SBU Nuclear Structure Laboratory, and chair of the Physics Department twice. In 1998, when SBU joined with Battelle Memorial Institute of Columbus, Ohio, to manage BNL for the U.S. Department of Energy, he moved to the lab as Deputy Director of Science & Technology and, for almost 2 years, as Interim Director. He returned to the University in 2005. In the 1980’s and 1990’s he served first as member and then as chair of the NSF/DOE Nuclear Science Advisory Committee, which advises the Federal Government on almost all funding for nuclear science. He also served on many international advisory committees in Europe and Asia.

He is author and co-author of about 180 articles in refereed journals and books, and served in editorial functions of several high-impact international journals on nuclear and particle physics.

His phone number at SBU is (631) 632 8102; his e-mail is ppaul@bnl.gov or peter.paul@stonybrook.edu.
