Richard J. Reeder, Associate Vice President for Brookhaven Affairs

Richard Reeder

Richard Reeder is Professor of Geochemistry in the Geosciences Department at Stony Brook University. As Associate Vice President for Brookhaven Affairs, he supports the Provost in fostering and enlarging the interactions and collaborations between Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and Stony Brook University (SBU). He also serves as primary contact for SBU-BNL Joint Appointments. The Office of Brookhaven Affairs shares space in the Provost’s Office suite on the 4th floor of the SBU Administration Building, where Reeder has an office.

Reeder’s research interests span several areas in geochemistry, including structure-function relationships of disordered and amorphous solids, sorption behavior of heavy metals on minerals, and bioavailability of contaminants in environmental systems. He has focused particularly on X-ray scattering and spectroscopy studies of natural and engineered materials of environmental relevance. His research group has made extensive use of NSLS and other synchrotron facilities. He also collaborates with researchers in the health sciences to address problems at the interface of environmental chemistry and environmental health. Reeder is author of more than 120 peer-reviewed articles. At BNL, he was a past member of the NSLS UEC, a former PRT member at NSLS, and served on the beamline advisory team for the SRX beamline at NSLS-II.

Reeder has been on the Stony Brook faculty since 1980. He received his PhD from UC Berkeley, and has a BS from University of Illinois. He served as Chair of the Geosciences Department for five years. Reeder was Director of the Center for Environmental Molecular Sciences, which included a partnership with Environmental Sciences at BNL. He has also served as Interim Deputy Provost at Stony Brook. Reeder was closely involved in the SBU-Battelle team that successfully recompeted the management and operations contract for BNL that began in 2015.

His phone numbers at SBU are (631) 632-4349; (631) 632-8208; his e-mail is
