Maria Kosugi

Maria Kosugi received her Ph. D. in anthropology from Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto in 2009, focusing on the role of the Qur’an as the basis of Muslim societies in Arab and Southeast Asian countries. She worked as a full time researcher at Kyoto University from 2009 to 2012 while teaching at various universities. At Stony Brook she is reexamining modern interpretations of the Qur’an, especially that of Toshihiko Izutsu, and reviewing the various theories of religion proposed in anthropology, sociology, and religious studies.
